A first-generation college student means that your parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family members' level of education.

The term "Income eligible" often applies to students who are Pell-Eligible (as indicated as a result of their processed FAFSA). Another indicator is an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150% of the poverty level amount.

If your are unsure of your classification as first-generation or income-eligible, please reach out by visiting the Memorial Union 3rd floor, suite 3220 or email firstscholars@iastate.edu. The team is here to help you determine what classifications align with your personal status.
